Pop Inspo

Having used Warhol’s body of work, predominantly in my Concept Board, It was unquestionable that I would choose Andy Warhol to be my source of inspiration. His work is just so attractive, colourful and thought-provoking.

His works could be broadly placed into four categories. Celebrity portraits, commercial products, food items and animals.

His celebrity portraits made well known, distinguished personalities even more famous. He used silkscreen printing which created a defined image and allowed him to produce for the masses.

Andy thrived on the production of mass produced commercial products. His soup cans were disputably his most famous work. He tried to depict everyday objects in a different light.

Food was also a major part of his art works, though, it, more often than not, gets lost amongst his more glamorous works. Animals are also part of his repertoire though lesser known.

Apart from these, I added quotes by him, as today he is not only known as a pop artist but also as a pop-cult phenomenon. I placed a big picture of him in the centre to show the importance of his personality in his artworks. I coloured his face red, like he did with so many celebrities he illustrated.

So this was my inspiration board. To know what part of Andy Warhol’s work I used, read my next post.

Concept Contemplation

My concept board comprised of images that matched my perception of pop art. By the time I created a concept board, I had completed most of my research. This is why my concept of pop art was quite clear. I used blue, red and yellow as my back background as they are known to be the most prevalent colours in Pop Art. Most images I used are taken from the 1960’s pop art movement and most of out of those are by Andy Warhol.

Without realizing, I gave Mr Warhol more importance than other artists. I used his most famous works like the Campbell Soup Can, illustrated Mickey Mouse, Coke bottles and screen printed Marilyn Monroe. I chose these works because I thought his art was popular, influential and gave shape to the Pop Art movement in the United States.

When I think Pop, I instantly think of Comics and Ben-day dots, that is why I made sure of adding pictures of the same. Lips have also been part of Pop Art since Andy Warhol’s first introduction in the 1960’s.  I decided to add a picture of the famous collage by British artist, Richard Hamilton, as I found it amazing how pop art could be so different for different artists or in different countries. On one hand, Andy Warhol used bold, bright colours, and on the other Hamilton created a light toned, even bland collage showing the new commercial surge at that time.

I also added striking words that are most commonly seen in comics. They were a part of the popular culture in the 60’s and therefore, part of Pop Art. And lastly, I decided to use a picture of the modern times. The image of the girl holding a pair lips is an example of make up in pop art that has taken society by a storm in the recent years.

Hurry up, Buttercup

It was time to make them boards! After discussing with my teacher and browsing images on the internet, I was finally somewhat ready to design some mood boards. Initially we were asked to create 5 boards. But soon, five became three, thanks to my frustrated class and my liberal teacher. But hey, I’m not complaining! This provided me with much needed time to ensure they looked substantially better.

My Concept Board

I began working on my concept board right away. And, it took me well over 4 days to finalize it. I needed it to look perfect!  Obviously, something had to go wrong. It turned out that the concept board was not even included in the final trio. Just my luck! Looking at the positive side though, now I had a little more experience regarding design boards and the concept, in my head, was clearer than ever.

Inspiration. Who or what inspired me in the world of Pop Art? There were many contenders. But ultimately, only the king of Pop Art came out victorious. Andy Warhol, one of the greatest artists of his times merged celebrity culture and advertisements with high art. He was an illustrator, designer and a filmmaker who continues to influence society even today. This is why; He is my design inspiration and I intend to base my project on him.

My Inspiration Board

Next up, Colour board. The first time I heard the words “Colour board”, I was instantly reminded of a colour palette. And honestly, my plan is to make just that. Without complete understanding and adequate time, it is practically impossible for me to make this board look distinctive. So, my plan, you ask? It is to create a colour palette, consult my teacher and find a way around this obstacle. I can do it!

Bright-Eyed And Bushy-Tailed

Hauz Khas Village

A View of Hauz Khas Village

Plans in my head, spring in my foot. My journey started at the famous HKV market of Delhi. Hoping to stumble upon some close relatives of the Pop Art family, I stepped inside a store called Chumbak. A tiny shop, selling colourful products that would attract just about anyone’s attention. Maybe, Pop art is just that. So striking that it’s impossible to ignore once it’s caught your attention. Sure, Chumbak is more endearing than bold but the basic concept remains the same. It is the use of popular culture to create art. And after much scrutinizing, I arrived upon a conclusion that Pop Art is just that. It is the art of popular culture.

What more could I learn? What sources could I find? Brainstorming ideas felt like the best option in hand. Books, videos and articles. The three most credible sources, they said. I started with the first, books. Books on Pop Art would have been fatiguing to find had it not been for the college library. I found not one but two books on Pop Art and it felt ecstatic! However, soon I realized that comprehending two books in two days was clearly not my cup of tea. And, my frustrated self turned to other sources like videos and documentaries. This was the best decision I could make. Videos gave me an opportunity to know my art without complicating it. It provided information while managing to make it engaging. We have been friends ever since.

Apprehending the concept was fairly easy.  Using that understanding to build something was not going to be. We were asked to create different design boards and I had little to no understanding of them. Thankfully, I had a class with my teacher the next day. And I hoped to clear all my doubts regarding this project! I was soon going to make some beautiful design boards.

Take No.2

There I sat with a paper and a pen, thinking and rethinking my options. I was asked to choose ONE topic out of the countless cultures that exist. It could be anything. Monuments, Movements, Cinema, Indian trades. I had to select one. And I was frustrated.

After scrutinizing for 2 days, I finalized three topics. Ironically, had I been given an hour, I would have chosen exactly the same! So, it was decided. Gothic Art, Pop Art and Street Art were the chosen ones.

My next task was to receive a green light from the teachers. A task that felt more like a burden in my irrational mind. My worst fear you ask? Professors absolutely detest my   choices and leave the classroom, without uttering a single word. My only hope was they wouldn’t absolutely hate it.

Next Morning arrived, and it wasn’t all that bad. Discussion went smoothly but both teachers differed in opinion. One thought, Gothic art was not easy to incorporate into a material. Makes sense. But the other loved it. Great! Now what do I do?

Solution! The most obvious one perhaps. Move to plan B, and without further considerations I did.

Though treated as a second option at first,

Pop Art has become the only option there could be. I have been smelling, eating and breathing Pop Art. And I’ll make sure you do to.  So stay tuned as there’s a so much in store.
